RSnake Report 20240820

American Airlines, debt crisis, Hezbollah burning...

Table of Contents

Hello and thanks for reading the RSnake Report! Jumping right in here… bridges being destroyed is nothing new in war but in this case it’s being used quite effectively by Ukraine, to cut off large swaths of space and limiting supply and retreat of Russian forces around Kursk. This also means they likely don’t intend to advance much further into Russia at least for a while. This does feel a bit like a trap and a successful one at that, and locks off about double the land mass than they currently reportedly hold. This could also be to prevent themselves from accidentally getting to extended and outrunning their supply lines.

“3rd and final bridge across the Seym River”

The morale continues to plague the Russian forces, especially the conscripted forces with an entire company surrendering. Meanwhile the Russians have mobilized their space force to do grunt work, because they are running out of trained, combat effective soldiers.

It should also be noted that there are a lot of rumors flying that Ukraine did not notify the United States prior to attack. Whether that is true or not is up for debate, but it is actually a good that that they are acting on their own to some degree. It gives the United States some plausible deniability.

“Ukraine did not notify the US in advance”

Meanwhile Israel continues to strategically point targets of interest in Lebanon. Several air strikes near weapons depots and other military targets are being reported around the Beqaa Valley.

“Hezbollah is Burning”

On the Israeli conflict side, this one took me surprise: American Airlines has stopped flying to Israel for at least the rest of the year. I had to look it up myself to believe it. AA will sell flights to Israel but they’re operated by Iberia. Rumor is this will last until at least April of 2025. Either their intel is screaming red flags for US flights which are slow and prone to being easily destroyed with MANPADs and SAMs, or they are simply trying to streamline routes in the middle of uncertainty.

“operated by Iberia”

Last up is a chilling thread about the economy. The TLDR is affordability is crazy low, debt is crazy high. This feels like we’re leading up to another massive crash like in 2008 - another debt crisis. But this time it’s spread around to all sorts of creditors, beyond just the housing lending banks. That thread is worth the read.

“Credit Card Defaults at Record Levels”

We’ll need to keep our collective eyes on that one. Okay, onto the articles!

Nicaragua has banned 1,500 NGOs as part of a crackdown against civil society groups viewed as hostile by President Daniel Ortega. The move involves the confiscation of assets belonging to the mostly religious groups and follows a longstanding campaign to suppress dissent. Over 5,000 civil society groups, private universities, and media outlets have been shut down since anti-government protests erupted in 2018.

- Over 5,000 civil society groups, private universities, and media outlets have been shut down since anti-government protests erupted in 2018.

That is generally not a good thing. Not that Nicaragua has been a bastion of freedom and civil liberties and rule of law… but this is a pretty large shift towards authoritarianism.

Recent violence in Myanmar's Rakhine State has led to a significant humanitarian crisis, with Rohingya civilians facing bombings while attempting to flee to Bangladesh. Survivors report airstrikes and indiscriminate attacks, resulting in numerous casualties, including women and children, and highlighting the ongoing conflict between the Arakan Army and the Myanmar military. As conditions worsen, many Rohingya are trying to escape violence, complicating their precarious situation in both Myanmar and Bangladesh.

- A massacre of Rohingya civilians occurred as they attempted to escape Myanmar.
- Survivors describe bombings by drones and gunfire, leading to numerous fatalities.
- The violence has escalated amid a broader civil conflict involving the Arakan Army.

The question for Bangladesh is how will they handle this flood of refugees? The only good news is unlike a lot of conflicts this may only be a temporary situation for the people fleeing.

Over 600 pounds of methamphetamine were found concealed within a shipment of celery in California, with an estimated street value of $755,000. The discovery was made by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Otay Mesa Commercial Facility on August 9. The incident is attributed to Operation Apollo, a counter-fentanyl effort launched in southern California.

By the way, you may not have heard of carfentanil because I hadn’t until recently. If fentanyl was the scariest drug on the market and far scarier than Meth, carfentanil will make fentanyl look similarly weak once you start seeing it. It is already making it’s rounds in the mid-western cities, where virtually every drug is laced with it now. It is wildly more powerful and therefore cheaper. Expect to see that flooding your home towns, straight from sketchy Chinese labs, btw. An interesting side note, the Russian SPECOPS used a aerosolized cocktail that included carfentalil during that Chechen movie theatre hostage crisis in 2002 to subdue the terrorists.

Lithuania has begun construction on a military campus to accommodate a German NATO brigade, enhancing NATO's presence in Eastern Europe. The facility, spanning 170 hectares and including various infrastructure, aims to support the stationed brigade of over 4,000 soldiers in response to growing regional tensions.

- Lithuania is launching its largest military project since independence, building a base for a German NATO brigade.
- The campus will enhance NATO's ability to respond quickly to emerging threats in Eastern Europe.
- The construction represents NATO's strategic shift toward deterrence by denial in the Baltics.

They are very close to the Ukraine conflict. The irony of Putin’s actions is he has done more to make NATO seem attractive than anything NATO itself could have done.

There has been a lot of talk amongst my friends about a new set of underwater and swift-boat autonomous designs. I think there is about to be a big revolution in autonomous watercraft. One bad thing about water is if you sink, you’re in the middle of water. At least on land, you can walk to rescue - you’re not swimming your way out from the ocean no matter how strong a swimmer you are, as we saw with those two SEALs drowning a few months back. It’s better to let the robots fight at sea.

Ukrainian forces have been seizing and occupying Russian territory, marking the first time since World War Two that a foreign army has been fighting inside Russia. The Kremlin vows to 'force the enemy' out of Russia, but there is no common view on how to achieve peace. Ordinary Russians use the word 'war' to describe all of this.

I don’t think the average Russian is going to be able to process much more of Putin’s propaganda. Imagine hearing about Nazis for the last year and crushing Kiev in days and now they’re not even sure if they can keep their own land.

The US and South Korea have begun large-scale military drills aimed at strengthening their defense against North Korea, which has accused the allies of practicing an invasion. The exercises come amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula as both sides engage in a cycle of tit-for-tat military demonstrations. The drills will continue for 11 days, including various field exercises and computer-simulated war games.

- The US and South Korea have begun large-scale military drills, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, to strengthen their combined defense capabilities against North Korea.
- North Korea has accused the allies of practicing an invasion and has been flaunting its growing weapons program, including nuclear-capable missile launchers and battlefield nuclear weapons along the border with South Korea.
- The drills will include various field exercises and computer-simulated war games, and about 19,000 South Korean military personnel will participate, as well as some American troops, although the exact number is not confirmed.

North Korea is the one country that has done well in the Russian conflict. It’s worth noting that they have sold a lot of arms to Russia. Granted they are of very dubious quality - surprisingly bad even. But turning North Korea into a weapons manufacturing hub for their partners is good for them, if they can start delivering munitions that don’t blow up their own team.

- The Philippines has filed 40 diplomatic protests to China this year for violating its sovereignty
- China claims most of the South China Sea as its territory, but has no legal backing to do so
- Tensions rise despite recent de-escalation efforts and a previous UN ruling that sided with the Philippines on the Second Thomas Shoal dispute

I have talked with some highly positioned people in the Philippines recently, and they are largely overrun by Chinese businessmen opening brothels and committing low level crime, allowing a vent for organized crime that can exist outside of Chinese borders while slowly eating away at their historically very family-friendly society.

China expressed alarm over US missile deployment to the Philippines, with concerns it could destabilize the region.

- US deployed mid-range missile system to the Philippines
- China expressed concern that presence of US missile system could destabilize the region
- Philippine Foreign Secretary reassured Chinese counterpart that weaponry was only temporary

Yes, and meanwhile they are ramming Philippines ships with their coast guards. Don’t let their rhetoric get to you on this one. China is playing a long game here, and will complain about any advance and claim their advances are only protecting the islands they just created. Very one sided and they know it and no one in Washington appears to be calling them out on it currently.

Lebanon is experiencing a nationwide blackout due to the state-run power company's lack of oil, affecting critical infrastructure. Social media users are attributing the power crisis to Hezbollah and the government, while the situation has deteriorated alongside rising tensions between Hezbollah and Israel. The electricity outage is compounded by ongoing financial struggles, pushing many Lebanese to rely on private generators for power.

- Lebanon faces a complete electricity blackout due to the exhaustion of gas oil supplies.
- Hezbollah is being blamed by the Lebanese public for the country's ongoing electricity crisis.
- The blackout impacts essential services, including airports and water systems, amid regional tensions with Israel.

Power will be an increasing issue for the world unless we either find some massive breakthrough or we start building nuclear plants. The obvious issue with Nuclear is that when attacked it’s a real catastrophe. Even in the situation where the Russians didn’t directly attack Chernobyl, they still dug trenches, unearthing radioactive dust and it ended up killing a lot of Russian soldiers. That’s more or less the best case other than simply shutting down the facility which happened with the power plant near Kursk.

Thousands of activists are expected to protest at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war and economic justice, despite Kamala Harris's nomination as the Democratic nominee.

- Protests are expected every day of the convention, with activists marching against the war in Gaza and demanding economic justice.
- The city has made preparations for security, including police training on constitutional policing and beefed-up emergency preparedness at hospitals near the security zone.
- Some protesters have expressed concerns about safety, worried that protests could become unpredictable or devolve into chaos.
- Despite Kamala Harris's nomination as the Democratic nominee, many activists believe nothing much will change, and they will continue to demand policy changes on issues like economic justice and the Israel-Hamas war.

I expect this to be very politically charged beyond the obvious. We already saw one protester storm the stage. If the riot police aren’t engaged at some point, I’d be surprised. Last night we saw a neo-nazi hanging out with the Palestinian protesters unironically.

More attacks on energy. This won’t stop as long as Ukraine knows that Russia is dependent upon oil exports and fuel for it’s own war effort. It’s too strategically important to Russia to ignore and too easy to destroy for Ukraine to ignore. The footage of the Proletarsk site is pretty amazing btw.

The U.S. Defense Department is implementing a strategy to protect Taiwan from a potential Chinese military invasion by introducing large numbers of drones to create chaotic aerial conditions that could delay an attack. This plan for a 'drone hellscape' stems from concerns about China's military buildup and aims to enhance Taiwan's defensive capabilities while addressing the current drone production gaps in the U.S. military's arsenal. The Pentagon has committed funding and initiatives to rapidly develop and deploy these autonomous drone systems within a tight timeframe.

- The U.S. plans to deploy thousands of drones to create a defensive 'hellscape' in response to a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
- China has a significant advantage in drone technology and production capabilities, prompting concern among U.S. defense leaders.
- The Pentagon has launched initiatives to scale up drone production and enhance Taiwan's defense capabilities against Chinese military aggression.

The fact that this is a ways out from being developed, and the fact they are telegraphing it should give you some sense about how we feel this will likely go both now and in the future. For their part the Chinese have said they intend to stop it using their own drones. So now it will be a race to see how fast we can train drone operators, and get the cost of drones sufficiently low enough. Or, AI driven drones that don’t require human operators at all. China does not fear our allies, and the real question is do they even fear us.

The United States maintains 400 Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), a key component of its nuclear deterrent strategy, which are equipped with advanced guidance systems. These missiles have undergone modernization to maintain their operational effectiveness, while there are ongoing developments regarding future missile systems amid various arms control treaties that have reduced the overall missile count since the Cold War. The technology behind the Minuteman missiles illustrates significant advancements in missile guidance and military technology over the past decades.

- The Minuteman III missile system is a crucial part of the U.S. nuclear deterrent.
- There are currently 400 active Minuteman III missiles ready for launch at a moment's notice.
- Recent modernization efforts are in place to enhance the missile systems amidst ongoing arms control agreements.

And unlike Chinese missiles they really are regularly tested, as are the crews, and the response plans, etc. Professionalism and significantly less corruption is a good thing in a professional fighting force.

The AI chipset market for data centers is projected to grow significantly, with an estimated value of $38 billion going into 2024 and a forecasted growth to $138 billion by 2028. North America currently leads the market, and major players like Nvidia are maintaining substantial market shares, particularly in the GPU segment. The demand for AI processors and accelerators is expected to intensify, driven by hyperscale cloud providers and ongoing advancements in AI technologies.

- The AI chipset market in data centers is expected to grow from $38 billion in 2024 to $138 billion by 2028.
- Nvidia holds 92% of the GPU market share in early 2024, with the GPU market forecasted to reach $102 billion by 2028.
- Hyperscale cloud providers are projected to drive 50% of AI processor and accelerator purchases by 2028, with Google and AWS leading market shares.

I have heard one theory that we have locked off the Chinese from the AI revolution by not allowing them to buy Nvidia chips through the CHIPS act. I think that is nonsense. Not only is China capable of building their own chips, but you don’t need specifically Nvidia chips to do AI. If China feels they need chips, they’ll likely just build their own or work around it using other close-enough GPU hardware. This is the same country that had the most bitcoin mining than any other until they intentionally stopped the practice.

I have been saying for a while now that Apple finally has a very real reason to bother upgrading it’s hardware. The iPhone needs a serious processor upgrade. Of course that will come with increased battery needs. So it will be interesting to see how they handle this. If it weren’t for AI and some walled gardens to contend with I think it would be fairly easy for an incumbent to enter the phone market. I no longer feel that is the case.

Inflation rates in the U.S. have reached their highest level in over 40 years, primarily driven by a significant $1.9 trillion spending package passed in March 2021, which had no bipartisan support. The rapid increase in prices has adversely affected the affordability of essentials and has forced the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates, making loans for homes and cars more costly for consumers.

- The $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan was signed into law with no Republican support.
- Inflation rates increased sharply after the enactment of the American Rescue Plan.
- Rising inflation has led to higher interest rates and decreased affordability for housing and essential goods.

The growing demand for data centers, driven by the AI boom, is significantly increasing water consumption needed for cooling operations. Major companies like Microsoft and Google report that a substantial portion of their water usage comes from regions facing water scarcity, highlighting the unsustainable nature of this trend.

- Data center water consumption has increased dramatically, with Virginia seeing a nearly 66% rise from 2019 to 2023.
- Microsoft stated that 42% of its water consumption came from areas with water stress in 2023.
- Challenges exist in recycling water within data centers, as much is used for humidity control to prevent static electricity.

Water and energy. These are two things we are going to need a huge amount of. We might also see data-centers moving to colder climates to regulate their temps using ambient cool air to cut down on cooling cost.

Ticketmaster's nontransferable SafeTix have been deemed anticompetitive by the DOJ, with ten states joining the lawsuit against Ticketmaster and its parent company Live Nation.

- Ticketmaster's nontransferable SafeTix were designed to reduce ticket fraud, but actually aimed to limit competition from rival platforms like StubHub and SeatGeek.
- Internal documents show Ticketmaster's dominance of the events market, with the company as primary ticketer for 80% of arenas hosting NBA or NHL teams and Live Nation-promoted events making up 70% of all amphitheater shows in the US.
- The DOJ alleges that consumers have paid more in fees due to Ticketmaster's anticompetitive conduct, with an unknown amount of monetary harm requiring further discovery from Ticketmaster and its competitors.

This is the first time I have seen anti-piracy tech be used in an anti competition suit. This is worth watching, as this might effect all kinds of other tech, like video games, AI enabled cars, and so on.

Farmers in the U.S. are experiencing severe economic challenges due to rising costs and stagnating crop prices, leading to significant job losses and farm closures. The agriculture sector is facing a recession, with approximately 6,000 farms having closed in 2023 alone, raising concerns about the future viability of farming as younger individuals are leaving the industry for other opportunities.

- Farmers are struggling with soaring costs for diesel and other inputs while crop prices are down.
- About 6,000 farms closed in 2023, part of a long-term trend of declining numbers in the farming sector.
- There is a growing concern that the average age of farmers is increasing, with fewer young people entering the industry.

I smell more subsidies coming to appease them. But it wouldn’t be surprising if Kamala doubled down on her fixed price for all foods idea, mostly because people don’t understand how that leads to food shortages. Even the left leaning Washington Post has started saying that her idea is bad, so maybe she’ll wind that back and say she didn’t mean it. Hard to say.

Formula 1 is reportedly sending cease and desist letters to creators who monetize videos using its branding, forcing them to rebrand their online identities.

- F1 creators are receiving cease and desist letters from Formula 1, ordering them to stop using F1 branding in their online content.
- Some popular F1 personalities, such as Paddock Project and Mikaela Kostaras, have recently rebranded themselves after allegedly receiving cease and desist orders from F1.
- F1's aggressive approach to protecting its branding is in contrast to the NBA, which has a more relaxed policy on allowing fans to share highlights online.

I am a big fan of F1. That said, I think copyright is a difficult thing to be congruent with fans and fair use, especially in light of the AI revolution that will allow anyone to create anything that looks like an F1 car, even if every pixel is different an unique from any other photo ever taken. In this case suing companies that add F1 in the name of their company seems heavy handed, but I get their point - they need to protect their mark or it’s unenforceable.
